Dermal Fillers Treatment - Skinology Medical Aesthetics Clinic - London UK - 2

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers can be used for a wide range of concerns, including:

  • To correct or enhance facial contours of the cheeks, jawline, chin;
  • To define, shape or enhance the lips;
  • To soften and correct deep lines, wrinkles or folds;
  • To restore lost facial volume;
  • To correct hollowings under the eyes (tear troughs);
  • To improve the tone, texture and hydration of the skin.

About Dermal Fillers

As we age, our skin gradually loses collagen, its natural elasticity and volume. As a result, the skin begins to show typical signs of ageing, such as sunken cheeks, hollow eyes, deep lines and wrinkles and a ‘sagging’ appearance. Dermal fillers are a non-surgical way to achieve younger looking skin. By strategically injecting tiny amounts of filler, we can restore lost volume instantly, help soften deep lines and wrinkles and rehydrate the skin. Dermal fillers can also be used to contour and enhance your natural features.
At Skinology Medical Aesthetics, we promise to subtly enhance features, balance your proportions and naturally rejuvenate the face to help you to look the best version of yourself.
There are numerous brands of dermal fillers available in the UK. At Skinology Medical Aesthetics, we use fillers based on hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin which is well tolerated. The added benefit of hyaluronic acid fillers is that they can easily be dissolved and the results reversed should there be any problems, undesirable results or just simply because you’ve changed your mind.
Depending on your specific concerns and areas you wish to target, the practitioner will discuss the best options for you during your consultation.
Results are instant, but true results are seen after 2 weeks. For sustained results, you will need to repeat the treatment every 6-18 months.
The treatment involves 3 steps. Your practitioner will support and guide you every step of the way.

Step 1: Consultation and Consent

A comprehensive consultation is always undertaken to assess your suitability for treatment, understand expectations and to help formulate a customised and safe plan should you decide to go ahead with treatment.

During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss any specific skin concerns you may have. The practitioner will undertake a medical history and skin assessment and ask details about your current skincare routine. Based on the assessment, the practitioner will discuss whether you are suitable for dermal filler treatment. If so, they will advise on a treatment plan and provide their expert opinion about realistic and expected outcomes. They will also discuss the possible side effects, any risks and the procedure in detail to allow you to make an informed choice about whether you wish to have the treatment.

You are strongly encouraged to consider all the benefits and risks explained to you as part of the consultation and clarify anything you are unsure about. It is important not to rush into any decisions. Treatment will only go ahead if both you and the practitioner agree and are happy to proceed, and after you have provided written consent to treatment.

One week before your appointment, you should avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, St John’s Wort and fish oil supplements as these can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising. You can however take paracetamol should you require pain relief. If you are taking prescribed medication, including aspirin, do not stop taking this without consulting with the practitioner or your GP beforehand.

You should avoid drinking any alcohol 24 hours before dermal filler treatment as this can also increase the risk of bleeding.

Step 2: Dermal Fillers Treatment

The procedure will involve first prepping the skin by removing any make-up/skin care products from the treatment area. If filler is being injected to the lip, a topical anaesthetic cream will be applied and left on for around 30 minutes to numb the lips and ease comfort. A numbing cream is not used when treating other areas. The skin will then be thoroughly cleansed with an antiseptic. The practitioner will then use a needle or cannula (a blunt flexible tube) to inject small amounts of filler. After injecting the filler, the area may be massaged to ensure even distribution of the product – this step depends on the area being treated. The treatment can take from 20 – 40 minutes.

Pre- and post-treatment photos will be taken and held by the clinic for medical documentation purposes.

Aftercare is an extremely important part of the treatment to minimise risk and ensure good results are achieved. Detailed aftercare advice will be provided at your consultation but will include not touching or rubbing the face; keeping the area clean and make-up free; and avoiding alcohol, strenuous exercise/gym, saunas, steam rooms, excessive sun exposure or extremes of heat or cold for 24-48 hours.

Step 3: Review

  • A free review will be offered following your treatment to check your process and recovery.

At a Glance

  • Procedure time: 20-40 minutes
  • Anaesthetic: Most areas do not require any anaesthetic; a topical anaesthetic is applied if treating the lips
  • Duration of results: 6-18 months
  • Treatment recovery time: 3-4 hours
  • Expected side effects: These include but are not limited to some slight bleeding, discomfort, redness and mild swelling around the injection site. These should resolve within 24-72 hours. Infection, allergic reactions, bruising and an occlusion are possible but rare. An occlusion is where the filler accidently blocks a blood vessel. This presents as whitening of the skin, followed by the area turning greyish-purple. If left untreated, it can result in tissue loss in the affected area. If an occlusion blocks a blood vessel supplying the eye, it can result in partial or complete blindness. If you experience excessive swelling, pain, blisters or any changes in skin colour, you should contact your practitioner immediately.
  • Back to work: Same day

LEADERSHIP TO EXCELLENCE

Founder & Clinical Director

Yogita Dawda

As the Founder and Clinical Director of Skinology Medical Aesthetics, my passion for dermatology started during university as an undergraduate and stemmed from my personal struggle with acne throughout my teens and early adulthood. I recall vividly the effect of having bad skin on my confidence but with the right support, I was able to love my skin and myself again.

After graduating in 1999, I started working in a large NHS teaching hospital where I was fortunate to gain experience in a wide range of clinical areas. In 2002, I chose to specialise in mental health where I practised as an independent prescribing pharmacist. In 2022, I became one of the first credentialed Consultant Pharmacists by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), awarded to individuals who have demonstrated delivery of expert level clinical care and influenced positive change across the healthcare.

FAQs

A Medical Aesthetics Clinic is run or led by medical professionals who use their medical expertise to provide non-surgical cosmetic treatments to enhance or maintain one’s natural beauty and help address specific concerns such as wrinkles, pigmentation, acne, scars and ageing. All procedures are performed by qualified medical professionals.

Like most other medical treatments, non-surgical cosmetic procedures carry some risks so it’s important to ensure the procedure is performed by a professional qualified and experienced in medical aesthetics with appropriate knowledge in facial anatomy and expertise in recognising and managing any complications safely should they occur.

Absolutely. At Skinology Medical Aesthetics, before any treatment is provided, a face to face consultation with a medical practitioner is essential to help us understand your concerns, undertake a thorough assessment and recommend the most suitable treatment plan tailored to your needs and budget.

You can book an appointment through our website. Alternatively, you can email or call us directly.
